learning-centred coaching

In 2011, a post-graduate learning-centred coaching course taught by Dr Kerryn Griffiths is planned to be offered as a professional development module by the Queensland University of Technology Faculty of Education, in coordination with its Masters of Education program.

Rationale

Coaching is increasingly being recognised as a tool for improved educational leadership, teaching and learning. Coaching capability enhances leadership and deepens and accelerates learning. Learning-centred coaching provides a vehicle for leadership and learning that integrates multiple learning theories within the one approach. The technology age in which students live demands that teachers become more than a means of information transfer and adopt the behaviour of a coach. This unit explains what it means to be a coach and develops coaching competency among educators in leadership, support and classroom roles.

Aim

This module develops basic competency in the coaching process, an understanding of the learning theory that underpins it and explores the practical implications of integrating a learning-centred coaching culture within educational professional practice.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, you should be able to:

  • Topic 1: What is coaching and why does it matter to learning? What is learning and why does it matter to coaching?
  • Topic 2: Facilitating discovery learning through coaching
  • Topic 3: Facilitating the application of learning through coaching
  • Topic 4: Facilitating the integration of learning through coaching
  • Topic 5: Discovering, applying and integrating learning-centred coaching into your professional practice
