what is coaching?
There is a lot of confusion surrounding what coaching is. It is often mistaken for a form of counselling, mentoring or consulting. Coaching is none of these things. Coaching differs from counselling in that the people who come to coaching don’t usually have massive problems which need ‘fixing’ or which they need to ‘get over’ or 'heal' from. Instead, coaching helps people to understand themselves better and to use this information to get more of what they want and less of what they don't want. One of the major ways in which coaching is different to counselling is through the accountability it provides. No only do you discover what you need to do in order to facilitate the change you are wanting, but you are held accountable to following through and actually doing it! Coaching is different from mentoring and consulting in that your coach does not necessarily know more than you. Coaches are not the expert in your life or work - you are. Therefore, your coach is not likely to give you all the answers. However, Kerryn Griffiths is an expert in facilitating a process which will allow you to discvoer your own answers and these are the answers that are most likely to work for you. As a result of coaching, not only can you create positive change while you’re working with your coach, but even in the absence of your coach or after coaching ends, you understand the process required to discover your own answers and can tap into this tool to create positive change throughout the rest of your life.
